Pullman Kids: Geography: Canada: OttawaCapital City: OttawaPullman Kids: Geography: Canada: Ottawa contains pictures and descriptions of Canada's capital city, Ottawa in the province of Ontario.
Ottawa is the capital city of the country of Canada. It is in the province of Ontario. The province of Quebec is on the opposite side of the Ottawa River from Ottawa. The government meets at the Parliament buildings overlooking the Ottawa River.
![]() The Rideau Canal runs along the eastern edge of Parliament Hill. The canal is known as the longest skating rink in the world.
The National Art Gallery is walking distance to the Parliament buildings and also overlooks the river.

In January 1998, the Ottawa region suffered from a terrible ice storm. The city was declared to be in a "state of emergency". Some people were without power for several weeks. A giant branch from our next door neighbour's water maple fell on the hydro hookup to our house and ripped off the post. The transformer on the pole burst into flame and glowed in many colours. An official with the fire department was at the door within ten minutes. We went without power for five days although we got an hour or so in the evening. The tree fell after our neighbourhood was fixed. The radio announcer said the temperature was going to fall one night and to get out of the cold houses and into shelters. We went to a hotel.
![]() Despite the severe cold and snow, Ottawa does have a winter festival called Winterlude. People munch on "beaver tails" and sip on hot chocolate to warm up while skating on the Rideau Canal. The "beaver tails" are really a pastry.
In the autumn the hills are covered in bright yellow, red, and orange foliage. The same maple trees, which provide maple syrup in the spring, are beautiful to look at.

Along with the leaves changing colour is the event that children look forward to all year; Hallowe'en. On October 31st pumpkins are carved into jack o'lanterns and children dress up in costumes to go trick or treating.
