manatee

Manatees are big and eat plants. They can walk on the bottom in the water on their flippers. Manatees have four toe nails. They can swim at the surface of the water and stay under the water for twenty minutes. Manatees sleep at the bottom. They are mammals and are related to elephants. They live in warm water.

Manatees are usually slow but they can get fast. Manatees are very friendly and they like getting scratched on their chin and chest.

Manatees can live in fresh and salt water. Manatees drink fresh water. They can stay without fresh water for a long time.

They live in Florida in the ocean and everglades. They start in north Florida and they go all the way down past the Amazon River.

I've seen them in the Miami Seaquarium and Sea World.

There aren't very many manatees. They get run over by boats. Drive the boats slower!

In the photo below is a manatee recuperating at Sea World, Florida, U.S.A. She was found far out to sea; weak and very thin. To simplify care of these animals, the bottom of the pool can be raised and lowered. Thus, the pool does not need to be drained and then refilled with water.

Save the Manatee Club If you've been to Florida then you've probably seen manatees. They're cute and harmless and meant to be keeping estuaries open by eating greens. They are quickly disappearing because careless boaters run into them.
